Johnson County is pursuing a referendum to design and construct a new sheriff’s office and jail facility on November 3, 2026.
Ballot question:
“Shall the County of Johnson, State of Iowa, issue its general obligation bonds in an amount not exceeding the amount of $94,500,000 for the purpose of acquiring land and constructing, equipping and furnishing a new sheriff’s office and jail facility?”
Under Iowa law, general obligation bond measures for major projects, such as building construction, renovations, or land purchases, must meet a higher approval threshold than a simple majority.
At least 60% of voters must vote “yes” for a bond referendum to pass. Only “yes” and “no” votes are counted in the final percentage.
